Summary

Act I continues as Kapila finally arrives. Padmini tells Devadatta to inform him about their change of plans, then pretends to go inside but hides to spy on their conversation instead. Devadatta tells Kapila that Padmini is sick and they must cancel their trip. Kapila is devastated, and he turns to leave. Padmini comes out and says she feels better and wants to go on the trip. Kapila brings their bags out to the cart. Padmini apologizes to Devadatta and explains that she could not bear to see Kapila looking so disappointed. Devadatta goes along with her new plans and gets in the cart. Padmini praises Kapila’s skill with the cart and makes fun of Devadatta’s inability to drive a cart.

They stop the cart and Kapila climbs a tree to fetch Padmini a Fortunate Lady’s flower. Padmini watches Kapila...
