Nicholas calls an old college friend who is a divorce attorney for advice on how to precede with a divorce. Nicholas is not happy with what he learns. Paige has the upper hand because she put Nicholas through medical school, so she is entitled to a large part of his earnings. Additionally, Paige does not work the long hours Nicholas does, so she has a better chance of getting custody of Max.

Nicholas returns to his office at the hospital and begins to makes lists, one of all the things he and Paige own and another of his and Paige's vital statistics. Nicholas cannot help wondering about Paige and this other man she had been with before Nicholas, whether or not she would have had the baby had she married the other man. The idea...
