Summary

In Chapter 16: “Lost,” Lucy runs outside. There, she finds Nate and Grandma Lilah listening to whatever is going on with the loons. Lucy agrees to paddle out to check on the loons while Nate brings Grandma back inside. There, she discovers an eagle attempting to attack the loons. Lucy shouts at the eagle to keep it away. One of the baby loons is caught and eaten. When Lucy returns to the shore, Nate urges her to lie to say the baby loons are alright to Grandma Lilah.

In Chapter 17: “Left Behind,” although it is only nature, Lucy still feels bad about the death of the baby loon. Nate and Emily want to hide the truth from Grandma Lilah for the rest of the summer, and report it to the Loon Preservation Committee only when they must.
