Austin Szerba

Austin Szerba was the main character, narrator and writer of this history of the end of the world. At the time the novel begins, he was a tenth grader at Curtis Crane Lutheran Academy. His best friend, Robby Brees, was homosexual. Austin was confused about his sexual orientation as he was attracted sexually to both his girlfriend, Shann Collins, and to Robby. Though he didn’t dwell on it as much, Austin was also confused about his religious beliefs. His father changed to Lutheranism when he married Austin’s mother. Before that, however, all of Austin’s ancestors had been Catholic. Austin had begun wearing and praying to a Saint Kazimierz medal he’d been given by his boss even though he wasn’t supposed to believe in saints because he was a Lutheran. At the end of the novel Austin decided to change back to Catholicism...
