Summary

Chapter 9 looks back at David's time as a young surgical resident in New York. On a meandering walk through Central Park on a rare day off, David runs into a fellow resident from the hospital out for a jog who offers David a ticket to that night's performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the park's Delacorte Theater, which David had no idea existed. David had never been much of a theater person but the other doctor assures him that the director and cast make for a hot ticket, and David looks forward to the memorable new experience. When the time comes for Margot's big scene at the top of Act II, she notices that Theo, the older actor playing Puck, seems in some kind of distress.
