Summary

Chapter 1 introduces readers to Garvin Poole, Dora Box, and Sturgill Darling. It starts in Dallas, Texas, and then moves to Biloxi, Mississippi. Darling, a friend and associate of Poole’s, sees the possibility of stealing a lot of money from a drug-cartel counting house located in Biloxi. He has asked Poole whether he wants to do the job with him. Poole, who lives in Dallas with Box, has money as a result of a previous robbery. He converted that money to gold and has slowly been converting the money back to cash. Now, however, he is getting nervous because he thinks the gold buyers are becoming suspicious. He also makes guitars, but that occupation does not make enough money to live on. As the chapter opens, he discusses taking the job with Box.
