Chapter 28 Summary

Lena takes her final portfolio to Annik before submitting it to the scholarship committee. Annik sees it as a sure winner, and she lets Lena know that this is an extremely important event in her life. She tells Lena that she is now an "artist." Lena's heart soars, but she has one last question of Annik: "Why are you in a wheelchair?" Annik says that she thought Lena would never ask.

As Carmen gets ready to go shopping with Win, she pauses to look in on her mother and the baby, now named Ryan. She has changed from thinking of the baby as one more thing to compete for her mother's attention, to someone she can build her world with.
