Summary

Chapter 23 is titled “Ger-tie! Ger-tie! Ger-tie!” Gertie walks the school hallway with the bowl of chocolates in hand, thinking of herself as a “thief” (206). She knows she cannot go back to the classroom with the chocolates so she stuffs the chocolates in her clothes and leaves the bowl in the hallway. In the classroom, the wrappers rustle and Junior asks why Gertie looks different. Gertie decides to eat the chocolates while she is on the playground. Mary Sue catches her, telling Gertie she is going to snitch on her. When Mary Sue tells Gertie that the chocolates are only for good kids, other students who have not had chocolates ask if they are bad too. Gertie continues to eat the chocolates, but starts to feel sick, but the other students encourage Gertie to finish them and she does.
