Summary
In Chapter 22, Charles takes Louise to her treatment. Elizabeth and Mary are not there again. He asks the nurse about Elizabeth, saying he is her father but she will not give him any information. Desperate to know she is okay, he drives to the tribal offices to see Mary before dropping Louise off. Mary insists Elizabeth is fine and demands he leave. Charles drives to Elizabeth’s house next, finding it empty. Louise gets upset, insisting “It’s all [his] fault” (192).
Later that week, drives Louise back to treatment. Elizabeth is not there. In the hall, Louise insists a “storm’s coming” and gets upset when Charles argues otherwise (195).
In Chapter 23, two months later, Charles spots Elizabeth shoveling her parents’ driveway. He sees her smoking outside from across the river over the following days, too.
