Summary

In Chapter 5, Charles visits Louise. Since their reunion years prior, her memory has steadily worsened. She has always lived with severe depression but now is mostly disoriented. When he arrives, she is convinced he is Fredrick. He realizes she hurt her ankle and takes her to the doctor despite her protests. Back at the house afterwards, Louise sends Charles home with food for her son, still convinced Charles is Fredrick. Suddenly frantic, she begs Charles to call her son’s school to ensure he is okay. Charles calls Bobby and asks him to pretend he is a school administrator. Bobby obliges.

Over the following months, Bobby begins helping Charles with Louise. He often talks to her on the phone and visits, too. Meanwhile, he makes plans to move to Florida, California, or North Carolina, convinced Charles will accompany him.
