The West

The majority of the short story is set in an undisclosed location in the American West. After discovering Elliott under the bridge out east, the Program brought him West, wiped his mind, and gave him one strict purpose.

At the start of the story, Elliott does not mind his life in the West with his cohort. He feels close to Jerry, and excited about participating in the Program's movement. However, the more Elliott begins remembering about his past, the more sinister his reality in the present appears.

By the end of the narrative, Elliott leaves the Program. Though he is not intimately familiar with the western landscape, nor its trees, people, or customs, he decides he can easily learn these things.
