Elliott Spencer

Elliott Spencer is the first person narrator and main character of the short story. At the start of the story, Elliott does not know who he is, nor can he recall his name. The Program Supervisors refer to him as 89. Once he has finished his training, and is ready to join the cohorts missions, they assign him the name Greg.

As Greg, Elliott feels purposeful and content. He is attached to Jerry, who he thinks is his only friend. He feels energized after Job One Day, convinced that he is finally contributing to society in a positive manner. However, after Job Two Day, Elliott is disturbed by the violence he witnessed during the protest, and is overcome by emotion. His distraught state of mind triggers his memories of the past. Another succession of events accomplishes the same reawakening of Elliott's former life.
