Summary

The chapter opens with Dunbar, Peter, and Mrs. Harrod in a pub called the King’s Head, celebrating their escape from the sanatorium with pints of beer they buy with Mrs. Harrod’s savings. Peter, who is clearly an alcoholic when he can afford it, just wants to get drunk and give impulsive performances to strangers, keeps stealing Peter and Mrs. Harrod’s drinks. Peter talks about going to the Beatrix Potter museum, which is nearby, while Mrs. Harrod rambles on about a nearby hill on the far side of the lake that looks like a Christmas pudding. Dunbar, who is anxious about getting to London and regaining control of his business, says no to his new but somewhat loony friends, they are doing neither of those.
