Summary

Chapter Seventeen

Chet and Bernie drive back to Pinnacle Peak and find a woman they do not recognize in the model home office who tells them that Elena Larapova is no longer with the company. Bernie then asks to see Damon Keefer, but the woman tells him that Keefer is away on business and she doesn’t know where. Outside the office Bernie tries Keefer’s home and cell phone numbers but gets no answer. As Chet trots to the parking lot he gets a whiff of beets which reminds him of Mr. Gulagov, but Bernie thinks Chet is reacting to Damon Keefer’s scent and they leave. When they get home Suzie Sanchez calls to check on Chet. After he hangs up Bernie tells Chet that Suzie is coming over for dinner and quickly starts cleaning the house.
