Beatrice Prior

Beatrice is sixteen as the story opens and is faced with deciding which faction she will join for the rest of her life. She has an older brother and believes Caleb will choose to remain with their family, leaving her to choose another faction. When Caleb chooses to leave their faction, Beatrice immediately believes she has to remain. However, when the moment of decision comes, she chooses Dauntless. Beatrice is told by a Dauntless that she is Divergent, but she is warned that it's dangerous and that she must not tell anyone. Beatrice struggles with this because she doesn't understand what Divergent means or why it's dangerous for others to know.
