Summary

In Chapter 6, “‘Kumquats on an Autumn Day,’” because Stephen was busy with Pink Salon edits, Ingrid did not tell him what was happening in her life. Meanwhile, she continued stalking John Smith with Eunice. While sitting in their car outside his house, Eunice hypothesized that John and Chou were secret lovers. The theory made sense to Ingrid, in light of her research.

When John emerged from the house, Ingrid and Eunice followed him to the grocery store. Inside, Ingrid asked him for the time. Afterwards, she “composed an email to the head of the Gender and Queer Studies department,” about the ethics of outing “someone without their consent” (94).

Ingrid was surprised to find Michael at her apartment when she returned home. Michael expressed concern over Ingrid’s dissertation, encouraging her to ask for help. Ingrid considered voicing her doubts, but stayed silent.
