Prospect Park

Prospect Park in Brooklyn is where Reese and Amy first meet. It is also where they meet again years later, in Chapter 1, to discuss the possibility of Reese co-mothering Katrina’s baby. During this later meeting, Ames observes that his old memories of the area have been replaced by new ones, but seeing Reese brings back the past for him. A flashback in Chapter 2 covers the “trans lady picnic” (71) where the two characters first encounter each other. Reese observes how, in keeping with trans women’s tendency to be vigilant, the organizers chose to have the picnic on a hill that gives a good view of the surroundings and would give them an advantage in battle. Reese’s observation and the name of the park associate it with both future possibilities and with caution.
