Chapter 1 begins by introducing the main character, Karou, a blue-haired artist. She is walking down the streets of the city in which she lives, Prague, and she focuses on how the day is an ordinary January Monday. She is on her way to school and thinking about school when she is approached from behind.

As her attacker is nibbling her, she knows that it is her ex-boyfriend, 20 year old Kazimir "Kaz." Although he's handsome and charming, Karou knows their relationship is over. She declines to participate in his new vampire tour in the city and she denies him the satisfaction of asking what his new job is, although she realizes later she should've asked.
