Summary

In Chapter 5, "Shades of the Past,” they arrive at the York Institute, which is dark and filled with depressing heavy furniture. Aloysius greets them and seems shocked when he sees Tessa. He had planned to send them away, but he abruptly changes his mind without saying why. He invites them to spend the night and instructs Gottshall to tell the cook the three will be joining him for dinner. Aloysius is late for dinner and the food is terrible. Aloysius arrives, saying he has information about Mortmain. He lists the facts of the case, including that the Shades were warlocks who could not have had a child of their own. Jem says Mortmain was adopted and Aloysius says that should not be allowed. When Mortmain filed the reparations request, he listed his address as an estate called Ravenscar near York.
