Summary

The next chapter is titled “1971-1975.” At age 13, Carrie wins the SoCal Junior Championships and reaches the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. The next year, she wins Wimbledon and begins competing around the world. Carrie learns that Javier is “hustling blue bloods at the club” for hundreds of dollars to pay for the travel and tournaments (36). When Carrie is 15 years old, they move to Florida where she spends her days on the court, a couple of hours with a tutor, and evenings discussing strategy with Javier. Javier hires a young woman named Elena as Carrie's “hitter.” Carrie has her first experience with love during this time, spending stolen moments kissing Elena's 16-year-old brother Marco.
