Summary

The opening chapter is titled “Chan vs. Cortez.” It takes place at the US Open, September 1994. Carrie Soto's opening statement is that “My entire life's work rests on the outcome of this match” (3). Carrie and her father Javier are watching Nicki Chan playing Ingrid Cortez. Each player has won one set. If Nicki wins the match, she will have won 20 Grand Slam single titles, tying a record Carrie set in 1987.
