Summary

As Chapter Five begins, Ti-Jeanne gets herself, Tony, and Baby ready for the mysterious ritual that Mami will perform to keep them hidden as they escape. Tony is nervous, but Ti-Jeanne reassures him. Meanwhile, Mami gathers the supplies that she needs, and then leads the others out to the barn, where she instructs Tony on how to capture one of the chickens. Aware that he was born and raised in a city and has no real way with animals, Ti-Jeanne volunteers to do it for him, but Mami insists. Eventually, Tony captures the chicken, and then Mami leads them all to a nearby crematorium, abandoned in the aftermath of the riots but where there is a chapel that Mami has used in the past for her rituals. Ti-Jeanne uneasily recalls those rituals as she and Tony watch Mami’s elaborate preparations...
