The Nolan family is eating dinner when they smell the 'stench' of Chanel No. 19. They attempt to discern the origin of the odor, but cannot, for it the "Spirit-Pussy, Puss Avenger" gliding in the night sky above the town of Tyreelin.

Patrick begins to refer to himself as Pussy. Although he has done this throughout the book, he now refers to himself almost solely by this name. Patrick is still unconscious, possibly drugged with a sedative. He fantasizes about getting his vengeance on the people of Tyreelin.
