Stories

Stories are the only way in which Maren can connect with the world in a “normal” way that does not involve cannibalism. Because of her urge to kill and eat people, Maren moves dozens of times throughout her childhood and never establishes any friendships that do not end in her killing and eating that person. The only way that Maren can connect with the world is by going to the library and reading books or watching movies.

Stories allow Maren to pretend that she is the main character, and this enables her to picture her life as if it were normal. She wants to have all the things that other people have, but her cannibalistic nature makes it impossible for her to do so in reality.
