Mixtli, also known as Head Nodder, Dark Cloud and Fogbound

Mixtli is the most important character and also the narrator of the story. Mixtli is brought to the Bishop to narrate his history, because he is over sixty years old, and has been a translator, soldier, trader, noble and scribe of picture-writing. Mixtli is born on the island of Xaltocan in the Lake region, which is part of the domains of the Mexica. At the age of seven, he is spotted by Nezapualhili, the ruler of Texcoco, who is in disguise as the cacao-colored man. It is found out that Mixtli is learning to read picture-writing on his own and he may be a useful addition to a royal court.
