Summary
The next chapter takes place in Fall 1983. Barbara offended Joan by telling her she could not have a plus one to her wedding to Daniel because she would not have a date. Joan said she could bring a female friend and Barbara said that she could not do that and implied it was because people would think Joan was a lesbian, without explicitly saying so. Daniel intervened and Barbara apologized to Joan and told her she could bring a female friend if she wanted to. Joan expected that Vanessa would not want to come but she surprised her by saying she would. At the wedding, Vanessa entertained an unhappy Frances by coming up with a scheme to secretly steal a bit of icing from the wedding cake.
