Summary

In Chapter 21, Hank and Ellis get a ride with a man named George, who obviously has a false leg. He drives a local van, making an array of deliveries. When they are gone, Maddie asks Anna to teach her to knit so she'll have something useful to do. Anna says she doesn't have time because of her all her other work. Maddie asks to help with the housework. Anna agrees and Maddie begins with Meg's room, then moves on to Hank's rooms. It takes a lot of work to put away his possessions and she finds some personal items that are embarrassing. She then enters Ellis's room and is horrified to find that he's wrecked it, obviously on purpose in retaliation for the staff not cleaning up his room. She's ashamed and knows Anna and Meg must think the worst of Ellis and...
