Summary

In Chapter 4, Ellis and Maddie go to the Society Hill Hotel. It's shabby but they can't afford anything better with the money they have. Maddie knows the only way they might be allowed to return home is if Edith intervenes. Maddie's father hadn't responded at all when she announced she'd eloped with Ellis, so she knows he won't help her now. The next morning, servants arrive with all their possessions.

Hank arrives and they tell him all the details. Hank then says he has booked passage to Scotland for all three of them, and that they leave in three days. Their friend, Freddie Stillman, made the arrangements. Maddie says there's a war raging in the Atlantic but Hank says they will be aboard the SS Mallory, a supply freighter that will be part of a convoy. He assures them they'll be safe. Maddie...
