Chapter 8 Summary

Four months after The Day, Randy discovers that Graf warms his feet. Among many things he misses is a painless shave, music, cigarettes and a full stomach. He does not miss whiskey but misses a morning coffee. Although he weighs one fifty-two and loses, on average, a pound a week, he is leaner and harder and feels better than before The Day. Peyton brings him a steaming pot of water and watches him shave with his knife because he makes funny faces. Dan uses an electric razor but with no electricity lets his flaming red beard bloom thick. He wakes on April fourteenth after a nightmare about filing and paying income taxes. Randy goes with Dan to town to trade for coffee.
