Summary

In Chapter Twenty-one, as Kendrick and Atme reach the town, they see Andronicus’ scouts coming from the opposite direction. They ride through the town and find the two sick girls. They are overtaken by the soldiers and manage to fight off the scouts but hear the rumble of Andronicus’ army coming. They put the girls on their horses and ride toward Silesia.

Gwen, meanwhile, continues to watch for Kendrick. She hears rumbling and is frightened to see Andronicus’ army on the horizon. Brom and Steffen encourage her to go inside the city and allow the gates to be sealed. Just at the last moment, Gwen sees Kendrick and Atme riding back. They all race back into the city just before the gates slam shut. Andronicus’ men first slam into the gates with their shields, then use a battering ram. Gwen’s men use...
