Summary

In Chapter 36, Hanako wakes in the night to find Baachan and Jiichan arguing. Baachan is crying about how sad she will be when Tadashi and his family leaves. Jiichan argues that they will have better lives in America. Hanako pledges that they will stay, but Baachan says she knows they cannot. She promises to enjoy the time they have together and says it will likely take a year or more for the citizenship to be reinstated.

In Chapter 37, Hanako usually goes to school a half day on Saturday, but oversleeps and misses school. Kiyoshi arrives with a kimono, saying it is payment for the rice he took. Hanako's first reaction is anger, but it quickly fades. Hanako considers the kimono beautiful, though it is far too big for Baachan.
