Summary

In Chapter 11, Hanako and her family board the correct train. Akira seems torn between fright and excitement because the train is so rickety. Hanako remembers that her mother had saved photos of the Dust Bowl that happened in the 1930s. Her mother had once said those photos reminded her of the Nikkei she knew who picked fruits and vegetables for a living. Kagako also felt a connection when her own family was homeless, living in a government camp. The people fleeing the Dust Bowl had no control over their own lives, just as Hanako's family has no control. Hanako hates that there are situations over which people have no control, and it makes her afraid for her future. As the train travels into the country, Hanako sees no signs of war here.
