Summary

In Chapter 52, Holly tries to think of “a rational explanation” for the rabbit coming into the house (194). Wondering if it belongs to Evadne, she decides to visit her.

In Chapter 53, while Nisa and Stevie continue exploring the house, Nisa wonders about the magazine, the boy in the woods, and the family Ainsley said lived there in the 1980s. She considers the different feelings in each of Hill House’s rooms. When they enter the hall, she senses some “deeper damage” in the space (197, 198). Then Nisa sees a carving in the wood that resembles her. The carved woman is fleeing the woods. When she shows it to Stevie, he does not see what she sees. Then, when Nisa moves down the hall, she feels Stevie close behind her; but when she turns, he is at the other end of the hall.
