Summary

In Chapter 38, Amanda walks towards the woods. Hill House looks evil in the distance. Suddenly, the wind hits her and she hears the house say that it sees her, too (131).

In Chapter 39, Stevie checks to see if the door is still there. He delays opening it to “let the anticipation build” (132). After dressing, goes downstairs to find Tru and Melissa arguing about the tablecloth. Stevie notices a gash on Melissa’s head and a ring like Ainsley’s on her finger. Melissa says she bumped her head and that Evadne made the rings.

In Chapter 40, Holly meets up with Stevie. They discuss Tru and Melissa’s response to the tablecloth. Stevie hypothesizes that Tru is abusing Melissa, because of her head wound. Holly dismisses his concerns and goes for a walk.
