How is the text structured? How does this structure enact Bowen's themes?
A Gift From Bob is organized into a prologue and eight titled chapters. The prologue is set in December of 2013, while Chapters 1 - 8 are set in December of 2010. The author uses the dynamics central to the prologue in order to enact a formal shift into his reflections on the past in the chapters following. Bowen's disorientation at the party and his encounter with the Big Issue vendor after the party, flood him with memories.
Throughout Chapters 1 - 8, the author intersects scenes from his past and present lives in order to explore notions including change, gratitude, loneliness, and the past. By allowing these different eras to formally coincide, the author enacts the ways in which former experiences dictate the individual's present and future.
Describe Bowen's perspective and tone. In what ways does his voice guide the reader through the text?
