Summary

In Chapter 13, Nesta is surprised at how sore she is after the workout. She stretches to try to reach a high shelf and Gwyn is surprised that Nesta is replacing books by hand instead of using power. Nesta becomes defensive because she feels that power “was utterly … grotesque” (146). Gwyn is doing research for a demanding priestess named Merrill. Gwyn gave Merrill an incorrect book and cannot find the correct one. They chat for a few minutes and Nesta is interested in the fact that so many of these females never leave the security of the library. Gwyn says she came here from Sangravah. After Gwyn is gone, Nesta asks the House for the missing book and the House complies. Nesta goes into Merrill's office on a pretense and manages to swap the books. Gwyn is grateful.
