"THE MAJORITY OF teen-age smokers already have found it desirable but difficult to quit," reported the 1993 Gallup study on teen attitudes toward smoking. "Eight in 10 believe they could quit smoking if they made the decision to do so, but other findings suggest this assumption may often be illusory."95

The easier-said-than-done truth about quitting smoking was quickly confirmed by other teens in the Gallup study. Fully half the smokers interviewed admitted that they had made "a serious attempt to stop," but had failed. Twothirds said they would like to quit, but had not.
