There are many treatment programs available for alcoholics— years of research have shown that no one program works for all alcohol abusers. Private psychotherapy or the use of medications such as Antabuse helps some people stop drinking. Many researchers believe that a combination of therapy and medication is the answer while other scientists are confident that some sort of genetic therapy will soon be available to help problem drinkers. The most common, although not necessarily the most effective, form of treatment is traditional twelve-step group recovery programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Statistics show that most alcoholics try AA at some point, but few actually achieve sobriety in the program.
