Chapters One through Three

Ella Cara Deloria was an educator, anthropologist, ethnographer and novelist. She was descended from peoples of English and French origins, as well as those of Yankton Dakota Sioux origins. Deloria was born on the Yankton Reservation in North Dakota and spent her life recording Sioux oral legends and history. She wrote "Waterlily" in the 1940s, but it was not published until 1988, after her death. This lesson will focus on the author of "Waterlily", Ella Cara Deloria, and her biography.

Lesson

1) In Class Reading: Hand out copies of a short biography on Ella Cara Deloria. Have the class read the biography and take notes in preparation to discuss it. Specifically, indicate any events in her life that may have affected her as she wrote "Waterlily".
