Objective

The first chapter, "The Things They Carried," contains an abundance of symbolism. Have students identify instances of symbolism in the text and discuss/analyze the significance.

Tasks, Ideas, Challenges and Homework

1) Ask students to write down everything they carry right now. What things do they carry are in common with other students and what things are unique to them? What do the unique items say about them as a student and person? Have a few share their results and thoughts.

2) Without opening the novel, what symbols stick out to the students from last night's reading? What do they think the symbols mean?

3) Divide the class into small groups, of two or three students. Assign each group a main character in the platoon and give them 10-15 minutes to find all of the symbols and things carried by the soldier, and what the symbols mean. Let...
