Research Project

Reading a novel set in a heavy historical context requires some level of research for the reader's full understanding. Have students select one of the following questions an conduct historical research to give a balanced answer in a three-page essay.

What happened before we joined the war in Vietnam?

How did the U.S. get into the war, and what was our role?

How did we get out of the war and what is the legacy of the Vietnam War?

War and the Cinema

The power of movies to communicate the human experience cannot be denied. Invite students to view a movie or documentary on any war and write a response to the film. Are there images from the movie that coincided with passages from the book? Were there scenes that were better suited for written media because as a viewer the student wanted more information...
