Eirik the Red was sentenced with oulawry in Iceland after killing a man and then getting into a fight with another about bench-boards. Because of this he was banished and had to leave.

Eirik knew to look for Greenland because someone else had seen land to the west when they were blown off course. When he found it he spent three years exploring it and making his home, then he returned to Iceland to bring people to settle there.

We know little about the emigration from Iceland to Greenland except that twenty five ships left and only fourteen arrived. Some were driven back and some lost at sea. There is a list of personages who went with Eirik that took possession of land in Greenland.
