John Winthrop

This individual led the English Puritans to New England in 1630. He lived from 1587 to 1649 and served as governor for most of the twenty years between 1629 and 1649 when he died.

Roger Williams

This English theologian and Puritan separatist lived from 1603 to 1683. He was expelled from Massachusetts for his radical separatist views and went on to advocate the complete separation of church and state, founding Rhode Island on this principle.

Anne Hutchinson

This Puritan woman lived from 1591 to 1643. She had a strong, bold personality and helped to lead a dissident church in Boston. For her heretical views, she was expelled from New England.

King Charles I

This individual ruled England from 1625 to 1649, being briefly overthrown during the first English Civil War from 1642-45. He was married to a Catholic and many felt he brought England too close to Roman Catholicism.
