Lesson 1 (from Prologue, Part 1: Chapters 1-4)

Objective

THE DEAD ZONE is a 1979 novel written by Stephen King.

The aim of this lesson is to introduce the novel.

Lesson

1. Class discussion. What do the students already know about Stephen King? What can the students tell about the book by looking at its cover and reading the title? What do the students expect from the novel? Why do they expect these things to happen?

2. With the students look at the questions Stephen King asks in the opening chapter. Divide the students into pairs and ask the students to write down five questions Stephen King poses. After ten minutes, ask the students to swap their work with another pair and provide solutions to the questions. After fifteen minutes compare the student's ideas and for each one ask what will have to happen in the story for these answers to come true.
