Chapters 1-3

- At the beginning of Chapter 1, the narrator, Lucas Painter, tells the reader he is about to relate the story of a day in his life that was a turning point.
- Lucas tells the reader as well that it was the summer of 1969.
- The day begins with a letter from Lucas's brother, Roy, a soldier fighting in Vietnam.
- So much of Roy's letter has been redacted that Lucas cannot piece the narrative together.
- As he reads his brother's letter upstairs, Lucas can hear his parents fighting downstairs, a common occurrence.
- Lucas shouts downstairs, hoping to interrupt his parents and get enough quiet so he can continue reading, but his mother, irritated, tells him she and his father are trying to...
