Lesson 1 (from Prologue: “Fire” and Part One: “Fog,” Chapters 1-6)

Objective

Splendors and Glooms is a young adult Victorian gothic thriller by American author Laura Amy Schlitz. The narrative centers on puppet master Gaspare Grisini and his two wards, Lizzie Rose and Parsefall, and involves a kidnapping, a witch, and magic. In the Prologue, entitled “Fire,” the reader is introduced to Cassandra Sagredo, a self-proclaimed witch, who is dying. In this lesson, students will identify and research the time period and setting of the novel and will analyze and discuss the character of Cassandra Sagredo.

Research Activity: Conduct research on the setting described in the Prologue: “Fire.” What years historically comprise the “Victorian era”? Where is Cassandra’s home located? What clues are given by the author to help the reader to determine the time period in which the story is set?
