Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss Belsum Chemical Company, and what is communicated about industrial pollution. Belsum Chemical employed many people in Bourne. The plant was shut down after it was discovered the company poisoned the city's water.

Class Discussion: What is the Belsum Chemical Company? What problems have there been with Bourne's water supply? How does Frankel relate the struggles of the town and its people? What connections does the author seem to make between all the problems the town is having and the chemical company? What class action suit is Nora trying to get into the courts? What anecdotal evidence does she have of cancers, birth defects, miscarriages, and other health problems caused by the chemical company's pollution of the water? Is Belsum doing anything about the problems the town is having? Why is Nora not able to get her case...
