Essay Topic 1

Write an essay exploring the symbolism of food and hunger for Alex throughout the novel. Though Alex eats heartily, she can never seem to gain weight or really feel full or satisfied. Cite specific references to the text to help support your answers.

Drugs and alcohol play various different roles for Alex at different points in her life. At first, she finds they help her avoid her problems with seeing ghosts, or "Grays."
