Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Johnny's decent into madness soon begins to affect all areas of his life. First, describe the physical changes to Johnny's home as he begins to go insane. Then, explain how his professional life is affected by his insanity, and compare the effects to the effects on Johnny's personal life and relationships.

Essay Topic 2

Lude is the only character that Johnny can keep a consistent relationship with throughout the novel. First, describe Lude, and explain what you think his role in the novel is. Then, explain why Lude might be the only consistent person in Johnny's life and what role he fills in their relationship.

Essay Topic 3

All throughout the novel, Johnny has various sexual encounters with random women. First, describe at least two of the women Johnny finds himself in brief relationships with, and describe how each of these relationships end. Then, describe what seems to motivate Johnny in his pursuit of these women. What does he gain, or lose, in each conquest?
