Even though Richard Perry is very smart, his single mother cannot afford to send him to college, so he joins the army as a way of escaping the Harlem slums where he grew up. Richie believes that peace is coming soon and that he will probably never see combat.

2. What happens to Richie's knee, and why is he still sent to Vietnam?

Richie injures his knee playing basketball and his records were supposed to be changed to reflect his inability fight in combat. Due to an administrative error, Richie is sent to Vietnam, although he is assured that the change in his file will be made soon, and that he will be sent back home.

3. What happens to the soldiers while they are on a layover in Osaka, Japan?

While the soldiers are in Osaka, there is another bureaucratic error and none of the restaurants or hotels will accept the army vouchers and the soldiers are forced to pay for their own meals and sleep on wooded benches in the airport lobby.
